Scope and Contents

The Board of Governors files contains monthly and annual meeting notes of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, Committees, Museum Associates, and Museum Foundation and contains information about Museum budgets and spending, collections management and object accession and deaccession, major building projects and Museum construction, collecting expeditions, public relations decisions, exhibition planning, and brand development. The collection also includes decisions regarding the repatriation of objects under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) as well as relations and exchanges with the George C. Page Museum, Petersen Automotive Museum, and the Los Angeles County Musuem of Art (LACMA).

Abstract

The Board of Governors files are comprised of meeting notes from the Natural History Museum Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, and Committee meetings as well as meeting notes from the Museum Foundation and the Museum Associates meetings, all spanning from 1910-2014. The collection also includes 3 reels of microfilm containing digitized images of meeting notes from 1910-1979.

Arrangement

This collection is comprised of 98 chronologically arranged metal ring notebooks and 3 reels of microfilm and is made up of seven series:

Series 1. Board of Governors and Board of Trustees tenure records, 1968-1997. Series 2. Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, and Museum Committee meeting minutes, 1910-2014. Series 3. Division heads meeting minutes, 1947-1978. Series 4. Microfilm, 1910-1979. Series 5. Museum Associates meeting notes, 1938-1966. Series 6. Museum Foundation financial statements and bylaws, 1960-2006. Series 7. Museum Foundation meeting minutes, 1966-1980.
